As breast cancer is common in women above 45 years of age, so is prostate cancer in men above the age of 60.
Prostate cancer is a disease which affects only men and it affects the prostate — a gland in the male reproductive system.
Statistics by the National Cancer Registry estimate that one out of six men in the world will be diagnosed with prostate cancer before their golden jubilee.
Though statistics on cancer is lacking in Ghana, experts say the incidence is increasing. So, there are odds that one could have a father, grandfather, husband, brother or friend living with this disease at any time.
But the cheering news is that, experts say, it is preventable and treatable when detected early before irreversible damage has been done to the prostate.
Why should men be worried about this cancer? Apart from the fact that it affects their sexuality, it can also send the victim to an early grave.
Early detection is a challenge here as many men are not likely to see their doctor unless it’s an emergency. But this may be dangerous, doctors advise. Indeed, physicians say there is an appreciable increase in the number of men being diagnosed with this disease.
A consultant urologist, Dr. Sam Adeleke, says unlike in the past when only old men were diagnosed with the disease, doctors now see younger men with prostate cancer, hence, men of all ages must watch out.
Adeleke states that many men would die without even knowing they had the disease as it usually has no symptoms. A few lucky ones may experience the warning signs, especially those at the advanced stages, physicians say.
Experts say the following factors may increase your risk of getting prostate cancer and advise that if four of these eight factors apply to you, then you must see a doctor to erase all doubts.
Being Black/African-American
Black men have the highest rate of prostate cancer diagnosis and death in the world, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, United States of America.
“Worse, black men seem to get more severe form, are more likely to have the cancer come back after treatment and are more likely to die of this disease,” Dr. Jane Worthington says. She recommends tests every year, starting at age 40.
Family history
A man is twice as likely to get the disease if he has one first-degree relative — father, brother, son — with a history of it, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
The risk goes up if more relatives are affected, Worthington says.
She states, “It may be as high as 50 per cent if three family members (father and two brothers, for example) have had it, if it occurs in three generations (grandfather, father, son) or if two relatives developed it younger than 55 years old.”
And don’t forget the women in the family. The expert adds that prostate cancer risk can be inherited from the mother’s family as well. So, ask about your maternal family history.
Being over 50
The older the man, the higher his risk. “In men between 40-49, the risk of developing prostate cancer is one in 50,” Worthington says. From 60-79, it’s one in seven. But don’t wait till you are 60 before you take a PSA test. “Prostate cancer screening should start at age 40,” Worthington notes.
Heavy weight
Being overweight or obese is a prostate cancer risk, according to many studies. Researchers found that men who put on extra weight in their 20s and 30s face a higher risk.
“A study by the American Cancer Society found that men with a BMI greater than 30 were 20-25 per cent were more likely to die of prostate cancer than thinner men,” Worthington warns.
Experts believe that too much body fat throws off the body’s normal production of insulin and testosterone, which may fuel growth of prostate cancer cells.
But that’s not just the fear of prostate cancer here as too much belly fat and a high-fat diet can also raise the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Fatty foods
Eating fatty and fried food is also a problem. “Dietary fat may not only help cause prostate cancer, but it may also affect the way it progresses — how fast cancer cells proliferate, their ability to spread and the body’s ability to fight off this invasion,” Worthington explains.
Foods high in saturated fats, especially from animal products such as red meat and dairy, appear to be the worst dietary trigger for prostate cancer, Worthington says.
Smoking
Cigarette smoking gives cancer cells a comfy place to grow, Worthington says.
“Research doesn’t yet show that smoking causes prostate cancer, but it has proven that a nicotine habit can help it grow faster and more aggressively. Tell him to stop smoking now,” Worthington advises.
Urinary troubles
“If he gets up frequently in the middle of the night to urinate, he could have problems with his prostate,” Adeleke counsels.
This is because the urethra, the tube that carries urine and semen, runs right through the middle of the prostate like a straw, experts say.
Urinary troubles often signal benign prostatic hyperplasia — a non-cancerous enlargement of the gland that’s common in men older than 40. Still, any changes in urination — including pain, weak flow, difficulty starting or stopping, frequent night time urination, or blood in the urine or semen — should be evaluated by a doctor.
Painful bowel movement
Because the prostate lives on the other side of the rectal wall, prostate enlargement or cancer can often cause pain during a bowel movement. This, along with a bloody stool, may also be a symptom of colorectal cancer.

IWC to Unveil Rare Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow at CarFest

iwc Luxury watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen has announced an exciting guest for the upcoming CarFest South 2013. The Swiss manufacture, which is supporting the event, will unveil the legendary Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow race car from the 1954/55 season.


swiss iwc pilot The Silver Arrow was the nickname the press gave to the Mercedes-Benz Formula One and sports cars in 1954 and 1955. These icons of the motorsports world are rarely seen, though their design remains a strong influence. Indeed, IWC dedicated the Ingenieur Chronograph Silberpfeil (Ref. 3785) to the Silver Arrow. The manufacture has deep ties to the automaker, having recently become the Official Engineering Partner of the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula OneTM Team.

Tamburi si mette il Moncler

Tamburi investment partners reinveste in un tempo brevissimo il ricavato della cessione della partecipazione in Printemps e mette un piede nella holding Ruffini Partecipazioni . moncler Tip ha infatti rilevato per 103 milioni di euro (attraverso la newco Clubsette srl, controllata al 52,5% e di cui sono soci di minoranza alcune famiglie di imprenditori socie di Tip), il 14% della finanziaria attraverso la quale il patron del galletto Remo Ruffini controlla il 32% del brand. moncler jacket sale La quota messa sul piatto da Tamburi equivale  a una valutazione di circa 2,3 miliardi di euro, per un gruppo che ha chiuso il 2012 con 624 milioni di euro di ricavi e 170 milioni di margine operativo lordo.


L’entrata di Tamburi non è tanto finalizzata all’ipo, che comunque dovrebbe arrivare entro la primavera del 2014, ma abbraccia l’intento di accompagnare Moncler nella crescita di medio-lungo termine.  Una strategia che trova conferma negli impegni di lock up assunti dai soci di Clubsette: gli azionisti di minoranza si sono impegnati a non vendere per tre anni, per Tip il lock up è addirittura di sei anni.

moncler Seit zehn Jahren werden in der Manufaktur von Mykita Brillen gefertigt. Exportiert werden sie in über 60 Länder.


moncler outlet store Konzentriert blickt die junge Frau auf die Edelstahlplatte vor ihr, aus der ähnlich wie bei einer Schablone die Umrisse von Brillenfronten herausgeätzt sind. Mit einer Lupe in den behandschuhten Fingern sucht sie die Oberfläche des hauchdünnen Metalls nach Kratzern und kleinen Fehlern ab. Sorgfältig arbeitet sie sich Stück für Stück voran. Nur die absolut einwandfreien Rohlinge werden weiterverarbeitet.

Der Kollege der jungen Frau schiebt die Brillenformen nach der Qualitätskontrolle unter eine kleine Maschine. Die Brille wird gerollt, das heißt, sie bekommt eine sanfte Rundung verpasst, damit der Rahmen samt Gläsern später nicht vom Gesicht absteht. Peu à peu entsteht aus der zweidimensionalen Form ein dreidimensionales Objekt.

Im Jahr 2003 wurde die Marke von vier Freunden aus Oldenburg, dem Brüderpaar Philipp und Daniel Haffmans sowie Moritz Krueger und Harald Gottschling, in Berlin gegründet. Philipp Haffmans und Gottschling hatten Industriedesign studiert, Daniel Haffmans Architektur. Krueger hatte gerade seinen Zivildienst abgeschlossen. In den ersten Räume, die sie bezogen, war zuvor eine Kindertagesstätte untergebracht. Der Name Mykita ergibt sich in schönstem Denglish aus diesem Fakt.

2004 stellte Mykita dann die erste Brillenkollektion vor, schon damals mit einer Besonderheit, die bis heute ihr Markenzeichen ist: ein patentiertes Gelenk, das ganz ohne Löt- oder Schraubverbindungen auskommt. Stattdessen werden die Bestandteile speziell gebogen und gefaltet. „Es ist so ähnlich wie bei dem japanischen Prinzip des Origami“, beschreibt es CEO Moritz Krueger. Eine besondere Art des Knicks in der Optik, sozusagen.

Aus dem Projekt der vier Freunde ist in den mittlerweile zehn Jahren Firmengeschichte ein international erfolgreiches Unternehmen geworden. Nordamerika gehört zu seinen größten Märkten, nicht erst seit Sarah Jessica Parker als Carrie Bradshaw 2009 mit einer goldenen Fliegerbrille von Mykita in „Sex and the City 2“ durch New York stöckelte. Mittlerweile tragen auch Lady Gaga, Elton John und Daniel Craig Mykita. Es gibt Filialen in Berlin, Cartagena, Monterrey, Paris, Tokio, Wien, Zürich und seit Mitte Juli auch in New York. Das Unternehmen kooperiert mit bekannten Designern und Marken wie Bernhard Wilhelm, Damir Doma oder Moncler.

2006 zog man in das sogenannte Mykita-Haus um, einen Backsteinbau in der Brunnenstraße. Dort arbeiten heute 180 Menschen. Der Großteil von ihnen legt selbst Hand an die ultraleichten Brillen. Zwischen 600 und 1 000 Brillen entstehen in der Manufaktur Tag für Tag, noch immer ausschließlich in Berlin und nicht im günstigeren Ausland. „Wir glauben, dass höchste Qualität und Innovation nur dann stattfinden, wenn wir nicht nur Entwickler und Gestalter unserer Produkte sind, sondern auch unser eigener Hersteller“, meint Krueger.

Im dritten Stock des Mykita-Hauses über Lager, Designabteilung und Kundenservice, ist die Fertigung von Brillen aus Acetat und Mylon untergebracht. Letzteres ist ein selbst entwickelter Werkstoff aus Polyamid, besonders geeignet für mehr oder weniger alltagstaugliche Sportbrillen, extrem leicht, flexibel anpassbar und natürlich mit dem speziellen Mykita-Gelenk ausgestattet. Klassisches Handwerk mit neuen Technologien kombiniert – so sieht sich Mykita selbst. Und dazu passt das futuristische Material perfekt. Manche der Modelle sind vielleicht eher etwas für den mutigeren Brillenträger, aber von denen gibt es ja mittlerweile genug.

moncler La sua società, che ha anche il suo nome nella ditta, è quotata a Piazza Affari dal 2005 e negli ultimi anni il titolo è stato fra le small cap che ha dato maggiori soddisfazioni ai suoi azionisti grazie all’andamento dei corsi e ai dividendi staccati.


moncler womens jackets Ma l’angoscia di Giovanni Tamburi, presidente di Tamburi Investment Partner (TIP) e banchiere d’affari di lungo corso è il prezzo delle sue azioni nonostante in quest’ultima settimana la Borsa sembra aver in parte riscoperto il suo titolo dopo una serie di notizie una più positiva dell’altra.


outlet moncler Un investitore privato dal Qatar ha infatti comprato la quota di maggioranza della grande catena commerciale francese Printemps da Borletti e dalla Deutsche Bank (per 1,75 miliardi di euro) e, a cascata, la Tamburi Investments Partners (Tip) ha incassato 42 milioni di euro e una “simpatica” plusvalenza di 33 milioni.

L’ingresso tramite la propria controllata Clubsette S.r.l.del 14% di Ruffini Partecipazioni, società controllata da Remo Ruffini che detiene il 32% del gruppo Moncler.

Una società famosa in tutto il mondo nell’abbigliamento invernale e il cui approdo prossimo dovrebbe essere la Borsa con una valutazione che potrebbe oscillare fra i 2 e i 3 miliardi di euro se si tiene conto dei multipli che girano oggi nel settore del lusso. E che può contare su una fortissima redditività nel settore: Moncler nel 2012 ha fatturato 624 milioni di euro con un margine operativo lordo di 170 milioni di euro, in crescita del 39% rispetto all’anno precedente.


Ma nonostante questa pioggia di buone notizie accompagnate ieri da alcuni report molto positivi sul titolo pubblicati da banche d’affari come Integrae ed Equita (che hanno confermato il giudizio “buy” con target price rispettivamente di 2,5 euro e 2,1 euro) Giovanni Tamburi vede il suo titolo troppo bistrattato dal mercato.


“ E’ troppo basso. La nostra società vale ben di più. E’ un mio grande cruccio che Piazza Affari non ci valuti ancora come dovrebbe. Personalmente mi sono dovuto fermare a fare acquisti sui titoli della mia società perché sapevo che nell’operazione Printemps la nostra uscita come soci avrebbe generato una plusvalenza importante (oltre 30 milioni di euro). Ho però continuato come società quotata a procedere al riacquisto delle azioni proprie spingendo al massimo possibile per quello che consente la legge il buy back. Da inizio anno abbiamo così raddoppiato la presenza da poco più del 2 al 4% di azioni proprie detenute perché crediamo fortemente nella sottovalutazione della nostra società. Il mercato fino a oggi ci ha snobbato e preferisce scommettere su altre storie anche perché non è forse facile far capire il nostro mestiere e la nostra storia. Ma sono convinto che il mercato si accorgerà di questa sottovalutazione e peraltro in questi ultimi 3 e 5 anni abbiamo sovraperformato come titolo sia in Italia che in Europa l’indice delle small cap europee”.


La specialità di TIP è diventare partner finanziario di società quotate e non quotate, cercando di accompagnarle nello sviluppo. La vostra strategia è entrare come azionisti di minoranza ma in modo attivo. Quali sono le più importanti partecipazione che detenete fra le non quotate?


“Veniamo considerati una società di private equity e oggi nel nostro portafoglio le società quotate pesano per circa il 65% e quelle non quotate per il 35%. Gli investimenti più importanti fra le aziende non quotate sono ora quelli fatti su Moncler e poi il secondo è quello in Intercos, società specializzata in profumi e cosmetici che di fatto è il leader mondiale nelle forniture per i più grandi marchi da Lancome a L’Oreal a Proter&Gamble.


E’ una società con 400 milioni di euro di fatturato circa e 50 milioni di euro di ebitda.


Il nostro portafoglio di società quotate comprende invece diverse società di cui deteniamo direttamente e indirettamente importanti quote di partecipazioni come Amplifon, Bolzoni, Datalogic, Servizi Italia, Prysmian fra le più note”.



Quando investite in una società non quotata utilizzate gli stessi criteri che usate per decidere se entrare in una società quotata? Ovvero come ha spiegato in una presentazione “qualità ed affidabilità del management”, “esistenza di peculiarità commerciali ed industriali” , “possibilità concrete di avere un ruolo di socio attivo”, “possibili evoluzioni aziendali o nella struttura azionaria”…


 


“Sì per noi è assolutamente irrilevante che una società sia quotata o meno. E’ solo un dettaglio tecnico. Noi non facciamo operazioni di buy out ovvero rileviamo il pacchetto di controllo di aziende magari caricando il debito sulla società bersaglio. E quindi operiamo con le caratteristiche che lei ha descritto come investitori di medio-lungo periodo con una posizione di minoranza ma entrando quasi sempre nel consiglio di amministrazione e quindi per noi non c’è differenza da questo punto di vista fra Prysmian e Moncler, Intercos e Interpump.


Il nostro approccio e specializzazione è più sul lato finanziario dove porto anche la mia esperienza personale di quasi 40 anni nel settore. Abbiamo da molto tempo la sensazione che in Europa e in Italia i top manager sono focalizzati più su tematiche industriali che finanziarie e il nostro valore aggiunto può essere proprio quello di fornire non solo mezzi freschi ma anche questo know how”.


Può fare un esempio concreto?


“Il caso dell’azienda Interpump di cui siamo azionisti da molti anni è piuttosto esemplificativo del nostro possibile contributo. E’ un’ottima società, leader mondiale nel suo settore, e in tempi non sospetti già nel 2005-2006 abbiamo consigliato al suo management di puntare a finanziarsi sul lungo termine perché temevo un credit crunch e la chiusura dei rubinetti del credito. Questa società ha seguito il nostro consiglio, aprendo linee di finanziamento a lungo termine per poi crescere e mettere a segno acquisizioni nel settore. Con il crollo dei mercati poi il titolo era sceso da 8 a 2 nel 2008-2009 e il nostro consiglio è stato quello di varare un aumento di capitale con warrant. Un modo per mettere fieno in cascina e fare un’operazione a favore di tutti i soci. Oggi il titolo è tornato vicino agli 8 euro, quando la società ha dovuto fare acquisizioni aveva i soldi in cassa e tutti hanno guadagnato e moltissimo (compresi i piccoli risparmiatori) da quell’aumento di capitale. Un altro caso interessante è stata l’operazione in Amplifon. E’ una società che seguivamo da tempo e ci piaceva ma non volevamo entrare acquistando le azioni in Borsa perché quando ci muoviamo non siamo un peso piuma e avremmo spostato troppo il titolo. Ho parlato allora all’amministratore delegato di Amplifon, Franco Moscetti e gli ho dato la disponibilità della nostra società a entrare nel capitale nel caso che la società avesse varato un aumento di capitale riservato per la realizzazione di un’operazione importante. E così quando Franco Moscetti, l’amministratore delegato di Amplifon, ha deciso di portare l’azienda in Australia, con un investimento da 300 milioni, è partito avendo in tasca una nostra lettera che gli garantiva la nostra disponibilità a partecipare per 100 milioni”.


Il settore del private equity a che punto è? Il credit crunch e la crisi Lehman come hanno cambiato questo mercato? Da come parla sembra che nel vostro caso è stato un fatto positivo per la vostra società…


“Fra il 2009 e il 2012 abbiamo fatto cose che non ha fatto nessuno anche perché avevamo tanti soldi in cassa e abbiamo potuto approfittarne per mettere a segno acquisizioni e operazioni importanti. Dal 1° gennaio 2010 al 2012 abbiamo investito quasi 500 milioni di euro e siamo fra i primi investitori italiani e fra i primi anche in Europa.


Nel periodo 2006-2007 quando dicevo nelle interviste che sarebbe arrivata la crisi tutti mi davano del cretino e ci criticavano perché avevamo tanti soldi in cassa che non utilizzavamo. Il tempo ci ha dato ragione e oggi tutto il mondo del private equity è profondamente cambiato”.


Come?


“Chi fa il private equity classico per come lo si faceva fino a qualche anno fa è fuori dal tempo. Questo modello è proliferato negli ultimi 30 anni iniettando soprattutto debito nelle aziende. E in alcuni casi questo modello ha fatto un pessimo servizio all’economia perché ha spremuto troppo le aziende, ha emesso troppo debito (caricandolo sulla società acquisita), occupandosi troppo degli interessi degli azionisti di maggioranza. Oggi il private equity si fa in modo sano con una leva equilibrata, senza grandi debiti e capitale proprio cercando di investire nel lungo termine nell’interesse di tutti. Peraltro andare da una banca per farsi finanziare un’operazione a leva è praticamente impossibile: se va in un grande istituto gli chiede credito per farsi finanziare un’operazione di questo tipo il banchiere la guarderà come un matto perché ha già i suoi problemi nel gestire e rientrare dalle sue operazioni nel settore”.



Immagino che sull’operazione Moncler ci fossero anche altre società interessate, anche più grandi di TIP, a diventare soci di Remo Ruffini, il patron dell’azienda? Come è riuscito a convincerlo?


“Mi ha ascoltato per non più di quarto d’ora e gli ho spiegato le stesse cose che spiego ora a lei. E il numero 1 di Moncler ha capito che solo noi in Italia avevamo a cuore il destino della sua azienda. E ci ha scelto. E può telefonare pure a Ruffini per chiedergli conferma di quello che le ho detto”.


Quanti soldi avete in cascina per fare ulteriori eventuali acquisizioni in TIP dopo l’operazione Moncler?


“Come soldi diretti fra i 100 e i 150 milioni di euro. Ma con i club deal (partnership fra TIP e altri imprenditori) possiamo disporre di capitali quasi illimitati perché ci sono alcune delle più importanti famiglie di imprenditori in Italia che sono nostre socie in Tamburi o sono interessate di volta in volta a entrare con altre quote delle cassaforti di famiglia in singole operazioni come è accaduto ora con Moncler. All’inizio su questa operazione volevamo fare quote di 10 milioni di euro per ciascun socio che voleva partecipare anche personalmente ma poi abbiamo dovuto abbassare il gettone a 5 milioni di euro perché erano in tanti a voler entrare e ancora oggi mi chiamano molti imprenditori perché avrebbero voluto partecipare”.


Quando è nata la vostra azienda la missione annunciata era quella di selezionare “tech stocks”. Invece vedendo come è andata avete virato decisamente dalla new alla old economy, guardando le operazioni che avete messo a segno…. Magazzini, arredamento (Roche Bobois), piumini.


“E’ cambiato anche il mercato ma gli stessi analisti ci hanno fatto capire che una società come la nostra dove puntare sulle eccellenze e diversificare, cercando di cogliere a largo raggio le opportunità d’investimento senza concentrarsi troppo”.


Qualche tempo fa ha dichiarato che in Borsa il titolo Fiat è uno dei migliori da comprare. Lo pensa sempre e perché?


“Assolutamente sì. Fiat è una società considerata legata al mercato italiano e alla difficile situazione del mercato automobilistico continentale ma di fatto è oramai una società americana con un redditività e un fatturato soprattutto estero. Se non fosse quotata a Milano ma a Wall Street o in Olanda (come sarà per Fiat Industrial e con la fusione con CNH) il mercato la valuterebbe in modo più congruo e secondo me il titolo entro fine anno potrebbe arrivare anche a 8 euro che è il suo prezzo più giusto.


Se fosse una preda alla nostra portata ci farei sicuramente un pensiero ma peraltro Sergio Marchionne non ha certo bisogno dei nostri consigli in tema di finanza. E’ un maestro e tanto di cappello al lavoro che ha fatto e sta facendo.”.



Come giudica da esperto di lungo corso le quotazioni di Piazza Affari e lo stato di salute dell’Italia?


“Le quotazioni di Piazza Affari sono mediamente molto basse e fra le blue chips società come Fiat o Luxottica rappresentano dei casi ancora molto interessanti. Pesa troppo in modo ingiustificato il “rischio Italia”. Riguardo le valutazioni delle società in Borsa i prezzi poi non riflettono in molti casi il vero valore. Le oscillazioni spesso repentine non trovano giustificazione col valore delle aziende che si calcolano in base al cash flow, alla redditività, alle prospettive di sviluppo, dalla serietà del management. Quando calcolo il valore delle società io guardo al lungo termine e questo prescinde dall’andamento contingente dei mercati che spesso prende delle solenni cantonate. Si pensi all’11 settembre e cosa accadde alle quotazioni nei giorni successivi. Nell’immediato sembrava che il mondo dovesse finire con crolli generalizzati: se si riguardano oggi i grafici quel movimento nel lungo periodo sembra un dentino minimo all’ingiù poi ricomposto”.


E la situazione dell’Italia dal punto di vista politico-finanziario come la vede, la preoccupa?


“Se dobbiamo guardare alla situazione politica, della finanza pubblica e delle infrastrutture non siamo messi benissimo. Ma in un Europa che non ha comunque consentito il crac a nazioni come la Grecia, il Portogallo o Cipro non credo che saremo mollati al nostro destino. C’è poi comunque un’Italia positiva fatta di aziende sane e nonostante tutto l’export italiano continua a crescere e raggiunge trimestre dopo trimestre nuovi record. Ci sono non solo grandi aziende ma anche piccole e medie che sanno reggere alla competizione globale e sono gestite bene”.

TW Steel has grown from a four-piece collection to a brand that makes 500,000 watches yearly

Established in 2005 as a shared passion between the father-and-son tandem of Ton and Jordy Cobelens, it has grown from an initial four-model collection to a brand that manufactures 500,000 watches a year.

Although there will be only one winner, the prize is one that can be likened to copping the golden ticket to enter Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. The splashy cocktail launch was totally different, compared to the days when the brand was first starting out as Cobelens told this writer.

“I used to sell watches to my friends’ fathers and relatives. I would bring the watches to school and show them to my classmates, who would then show them to their fathers,” he recalled. The commission he earned from each sale was enough to keep him dressed in the latest fashion.

One time, a teacher confiscated the watches, thinking they were contraband but ended up returning them to the young entrepreneur.

Cobelens later became an accomplished DJ who put up his own label, JC Records, before he returned to the childhood passion he shared with his father Ton. With the elder Cobelens focusing on design for the watches, Jordy took charge of global brand expansion.

“Our bigger-sized watches really took off but we’ve noticed that the market is starting to go for the smaller ones in our range, those measuring 40 to 45 mm. In Asia, the Philippines is our biggest market but maybe not for long, because we are opening 50 stores in China,” Cobelens said.

With the opening of the branch at Shangri-La Plaza, TW Steel is now available at the Podium, Lucerne Shangri-La and Cebu, Chronos, Swiss Gear and Wrist Pod boutiques nationwide.

The key to the brand’s success is a combination of design, quality and value for money. “TW Steel watches are able to hold their own against more established and costly Swiss brands,” said brand manager Catherine Porlaje in a statement.

tiffany It’s no secret that gaming revenue has dropped to the 40-percent level of the total money spend in Las Vegas. We have gone from a gambling-based town to a full-fledged, entertainment-driven vacation city with nightlife and pool parties now becoming the vibrant economic engine driver.

“Crystals continues to grow with the addition of the iconic houses of Valentino, Richard Mille, Loro Piana and Rimowa, as well as Tourbillon’s largest store in the world — expanding our collection to more than 40 boutiques.

“As it was originally intended, Crystals is the United States’ first luxury-only shopping center featuring the largest collection of unique-to-market stores in Las Vegas. Without question, it is the place for luxury retail shopping on the Strip.”

“We recognized this morning in practice that we needed to head in a different direction,” Fogarty said. “We started down that path but weren’t able to make any progress because of some yellows.

The No. 99 GAINSCO “Red Dragon,” and Gurney and Fogarty, finished third one race ago at Indianapolis, the lone Corvette in the top four that saw faster BMW-powered Daytona Prototypes finish first, second and fourth.



“I don’t think we have anything for the BMWs again but we certainly are close to being right up there with the fastest Corvettes,” Fogarty said. “Small changes around here really add up. It is such a long track with so many corners. If we can just fine tune it we will be in good shape, and I think we know how to do that.”



Track time is limited this weekend and Friday morning’s final practice was even shorter than scheduled due to some session-stopping on-track incidents.



“The morning session was kind of a waste because we just weren’t on track very much,” Gurney said. “It got black flagged just when we were starting to go out a couple of times. We did qualify ahead of the No. 2, and they are the championship leader, so that is good.”



Gurney and Fogarty are second in the driver standings with 229 points, 10 behind championship leaders Ryan Dalziel and Alex Popow in the No. 2 Starworks BMW Riley. The same 229 points has the BobStallingsCars.com No. 99 GAINSCO “Red Dragon” ranked third in the team standings.



Race-day Saturday for the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series features only the VisitFlorida.com Sports Car 250 race that is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. CDT.

Most California Asians, Latinos back early action vs. global warming

luxury watches online This is among the key findings of a statewide survey released last week by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC). Up to 78% of the state’s Latinos and 74% of Asians and Pacific Islanders want the state to act against pollutants right away.

A retail experiment opens Thursday in Rosemont near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

Stern says the experiment comes at a time when outlet malls are growing quicker than traditional malls . He adds that if it pays off, we could see similar developments around the country.

Developers say this outlet is meant to function differently than other outlets. Retailers and manufacturers used to build outlets either to get rid of merchandise they can’t sell, or separate the customers who will pay a premium for cutting edge products and those will travel to buy for the same brand at a lower price, says Jean-Pierre Dubé, a marketing professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. That’s why outlets aren’t particularly close to major cities.

Stern says manufacturers now have a different reason to sell at outlets -- they want direct access to their customers for greater profits. He points to companies like Coach, Apple and Tiffany, businesses that rely on selling directly to customers and as a result, became some of the most successful retailers.

Arthur Weiner, chairman of Fashion Outlets of Chicago developer AWE Talisman, agrees. He says the artwork and other services not found at other outlet malls give businesses a greater opportunity to show brand pride. He also sees this as the outlet to change all outlets.

“The product that was being presented in America was a very stale product, outdated, underdeveloped, didn’t have the ingredients that consumers wanted,” Weiner says. “When we were presented with the opportunity for this piece of exquisite dirt, we saw the vehicle for the change that we thought was necessary for outlet shopping.”

Leading the Elite Team champions with two individual gold medals were South African Chad Le Clos (100m & 200m fly) and Hungarian Katinka Hosszu (200m & 400m IM, as well as a 200m fly bronze), while Russian federation swimmer Yuliya Efimova also won two golds (50m & 200m breaststroke), a silver (100m breaststroke), and a bronze (4x100m medley relay). There were also impressive performances from youthful Elite Team members Vladimir Morozov from Russia (silver -- 50 free, bronze -- 4x100m free), Poland's Radoslav Kawecki (silver -- 200 backstroke), and Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri (bronze -- 1500m free). Both Morozov and Paltrinieri broke their national records, while Kawecki set a new European mark of 1:54.24.
Rounding out the Elite Team medallists were Denmark's Lotte Friis (silver -- 800m & 1500m freestyle), Thiago Pereira from Brazil (bronze -- 200m & 400m IM), Australia's Emily Seebohm (silver -- 100m backstroke & 4x100m medley), Lazslo Cseh from Hungary (silver -- 100m fly), Germany's Marcus Koch (silver -- 200m breaststroke), and Fran Halsall, who won Great Britain's only medal in picking up the 50m freestyle bronze.
In the open water competition, Arena Elite Team athletes stood out as they won eight medals between them. Germany's open water legend Thomas Lurz once again led the way with two golds (25km, 5km team event), a silver (10km), and a bronze (5km), while Tunisia's Oussama Mellouli was not far behind with a 5km gold and 10km bronze. At 38 years of age, perennial performer Angela Maurer from Germany also found form with a 25km silver and 10km bronze.
"One year on from our landmark results in London, Arena swimmers have not only consolidated their positions at the top of the sport, they have actually advanced them," said Cristiano Portas, Arena CEO. "The results in Barcelona are testament to the fact that our Olympic performances were no flash in the pan, and that both the swimmers and their swimsuits have more than earned their positions in the upper echelons of the sport. We are thrilled at the results of the next generation POWERSKIN Carbon-Pro Mark 2, and how frequently it was the most-worn swimsuit on the starting blocks.

BANGKOK: Three Malaysians on their maiden trip to Thailand were arrested yesterday for allegedly using fake credit cards to buy branded products and goods worth about 844,700 baht (RM86,000).

The suspects, aged 23, 28 and 30, were picked up at a shop in central Bangkok yesterday afternoon while trying to pay for their purchases with the fake cards.

Most California Asians, Latinos back early action vs. global warming

watches SAN FRANCISCO–An overwhelming majority of California’s Latinos and the Asian and Pacific Islanders think the state government should act right away to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, rather than wait until the economy and the job situation improve.

watches sale This is among the key findings of a statewide survey released last week by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC). Up to 78% of the state’s Latinos and 74% of Asians and Pacific Islanders want the state to act against pollutants right away.

omega During Monday’s press briefing facilitated by the New America Media, held at the World Affairs Council in San Francisco, Yoshitani said the support to reduce green house gas would directly improve the conditions of low-income groups, public transport and affordable housing.

The Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 signed by former state Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger set the 2020 greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal into law. This law requires a third of California’s electricity to come from renewable energy sources by 2020. Up to 70% of Californians support the law, but support drops to 44 percent if this will result in higher electricity bills.

While it’s legal to use metal detectors at Florida’s Atlantic and Gulf Coast state parks, Drayton told Florida Watchdog, treasure hunters have to get permission from the park manager and hunt only on the dry, sandy beach between the high water line and the sand dune.


The Florida Division of Recreation & Parks Department of Environmental Protection says the restriction is to ensure the “preservation and protection of archaeological resources.”


Now, it seems, cities are getting into the act.


St. Augustine recently decided to expand its restrictions by prohibiting the use of metal detectors on public property without the express consent of the city manager or the town archaeologist.


State treasure hunters are up in arms.


“If you lose your watch in the sea, even close to shore, I can’t help you find it with a detector because I’m violating the law,” Drayton said. “They can fine me and I can go to jail.”


The laws were enacted years ago when the state began approving licenses for marine exploration.


If you hunt offshore, where big treasure awaits discovery, you will need a lot more than a metal detector.  Along with special permits, there are numerous regulations and procedures to be met before you can even think about digging. If you actually do hit it big under the seat, the state’s takes a 20-percent share of your booty.

Beware fake goods sold online in SA

It is unfortunate . . . that [customers] are not happy with their orders.”


The mail also said that nowhere was the watch advertised as an original Guess watch, and the onus is on the customer to return the watches at their own cost for a refund.


However, Sunday Times reported that sales manager Johan Venter  sang a different tune when questioned and said the e-mail should never have been sent.


Venter said that the watch was definitely fake, and customers should receive a full refund. Venter added that the watch supplier, Charmaine Esterhuizen, had assured they were original and Wicount accepted this on good faith.


Venter said that Esterhuizen is denying the claim, and Wicount is considering legal action against her. Wicount has since discovered another fake product supplied by Esterhuizen. The company has terminated its relationship wtih Esterhuizen.


Venter admitted that Wicount does not often see the products before they are shipped to customers and it was a mistake to think the fake watches were legitimate.


However, Esterhuizen maintains that she told Venter that the watches were replicas when she sold them. Esterhuizen says she did not know it was illegal to sell counterfeit watches.

Swatch Foresees Strong End to Year After Slow First Half

much on that region, Chairwoman Nayla Hayek said at the annual
shareholders meeting on May 29.


The low- and mid-range segments of the Chinese market yield
the most opportunity, Chief Executive Officer Nick Hayek said
April 25. On Jan. 30, he forecast that mainland China’s watch
market will expand about 10 percent in 2013. He also said at the
time that he sees no reason for the Swiss watch industry not to
have “healthy” growth this year.


Swatch Group bought watch and jewelry brand Harry Winston
for about $1 billion in March. The company said today it expects
a “significant” contribution from the acquisition.


“This brand has huge, almost untapped, market potential in
the high-jewelry and watches activities,” the company said.

Der Kollege der jungen Frau schiebt die Brillenformen nach der Qualitätskontrolle unter eine kleine Maschine. Die Brille wird gerollt, das heißt, sie bekommt eine sanfte Rundung verpasst, damit der Rahmen samt Gläsern später nicht vom Gesicht absteht. Peu à peu entsteht aus der zweidimensionalen Form ein dreidimensionales Objekt.

In den ersten Räume, die sie bezogen, war zuvor eine Kindertagesstätte untergebracht. Der Name Mykita ergibt sich in schönstem Denglish aus diesem Fakt.

2004 stellte Mykita dann die erste Brillenkollektion vor, schon damals mit einer Besonderheit, die bis heute ihr Markenzeichen ist: ein patentiertes Gelenk, das ganz ohne Löt- oder Schraubverbindungen auskommt. Stattdessen werden die Bestandteile speziell gebogen und gefaltet. „Es ist so ähnlich wie bei dem japanischen Prinzip des Origami“, beschreibt es CEO Moritz Krueger. Eine besondere Art des Knicks in der Optik, sozusagen.

Aus dem Projekt der vier Freunde ist in den mittlerweile zehn Jahren Firmengeschichte ein international erfolgreiches Unternehmen geworden. Nordamerika gehört zu seinen größten Märkten, nicht erst seit Sarah Jessica Parker als Carrie Bradshaw 2009 mit einer goldenen Fliegerbrille von Mykita in „Sex and the City 2“ durch New York stöckelte. Mittlerweile tragen auch Lady Gaga, Elton John und Daniel Craig Mykita. Es gibt Filialen in Berlin, Cartagena, Monterrey, Paris, Tokio, Wien, Zürich und seit Mitte Juli auch in New York. Das Unternehmen kooperiert mit bekannten Designern und Marken wie Bernhard Wilhelm, Damir Doma oder Moncler.

2006 zog man in das sogenannte Mykita-Haus um, einen Backsteinbau in der Brunnenstraße. Dort arbeiten heute 180 Menschen. Der Großteil von ihnen legt selbst Hand an die ultraleichten Brillen. Zwischen 600 und 1 000 Brillen entstehen in der Manufaktur Tag für Tag, noch immer ausschließlich in Berlin und nicht im günstigeren Ausland. „Wir glauben, dass höchste Qualität und Innovation nur dann stattfinden, wenn wir nicht nur Entwickler und Gestalter unserer Produkte sind, sondern auch unser eigener Hersteller“, meint Krueger.

Im dritten Stock des Mykita-Hauses über Lager, Designabteilung und Kundenservice, ist die Fertigung von Brillen aus Acetat und Mylon untergebracht. Letzteres ist ein selbst entwickelter Werkstoff aus Polyamid, besonders geeignet für mehr oder weniger alltagstaugliche Sportbrillen, extrem leicht, flexibel anpassbar und natürlich mit dem speziellen Mykita-Gelenk ausgestattet. Klassisches Handwerk mit neuen Technologien kombiniert – so sieht sich Mykita selbst. Und dazu passt das futuristische Material perfekt. Manche der Modelle sind vielleicht eher etwas für den mutigeren Brillenträger, aber von denen gibt es ja mittlerweile genug.
