Overall demand also was driven by Tiffany raising its average selling price this year after holding the hike last year.  That, along with lower diamond and other product costs, unexpectedly widened its gross margin for the first time in two years.


“We’re impressed with the EPS beat given industry-wide traffic fears,” Citigroup’s Oliver Chen said. ” We like that diminishing product cost pressure is finally helping to yield a higher gross margin.”


By merchandise, the company cited stronger demand for higher-priced fine jewelry, or platinum and gold jewelry with diamonds, and statement pieces that are usually $50,000 plus. Lower-priced fashion jewelry, typically non-gemstone silver and gold pieces, continued to see weaker demand. McGuiness said he expects the lower-priced collections to continue to lag growth in higher-priced category this year.

“They start off very demurely and they’re all dressed to the nines. But then all of a sudden the wine starts flowing and the volume levels become unbelievable. They’ve been known to raid the stage when I start singing.

“No one’s ever actually given me their keys, but I have had women say, ‘How about it?’ It’s definitely not my idea of fun.”

But while Tony has never enjoyed that aspect of rock ’n’ roll life, he does admit he wasn’t a total saint.

“I went over the edge when I was in the band,” he says. “I did a lot of crazy things when I’d been drinking. One time, in a hotel, I tried to jump off one balcony to another balcony and the guys had to catch me as I was about to leap off. I’d have died if I’d jumped.

“Another time I jumped, drunk of course, on to a ­moving sports car and rolled across the bonnet and dented it.

“I’m lucky the guy didn’t shoot me.”

He says he did manage to resist drugs though, adding: “I’ve been offered them loads of times but I’ve never touched them. I’m fascinated by what makes people want to take drugs.

“When you see someone snorting a line off a toilet seat, it’s gross. And I don’t get how you can tie a band around your arm and inject yourself.”

With fellow bandmates Gary and Martin Kemp, Steve Norman and John Keeble, Tony had 23 hit singles, including True, Gold and Through The Barricades. Spandau Ballet sold 20 million albums worldwide.

But the band split acrimoniously in 1990 and a huge battle over songwriting royalties ended up in the High Court in 1999. Tony and the Kemp brothers didn’t speak to each other for a decade. The band eventually reunited in 2009.

“Twenty years of harbouring grudges, and 10 of not even talking was weird,” says Tony. “Looking back I wish we’d never let it get to that stage. We were just 16 when we got together, and as you get older you become less confrontational. If I had my time again, I’d have handled things ­differently.”

The first time round for the band, Tony would get bras and knickers thrown at him. Now he says it’s red roses and, ­bizarrely, cookies.

“I said once I liked chocolate chip cookies and now I get full packets of them thrown at me on stage,” he reveals. “I wish I’d said it was Cartier watches.

“Fans used to write love letters to me, but I haven’t had any marriage ­proposals.”

That’s just as well or Ali might have had something to say about it.

“She keeps me in line,” he laughs. “And having children at my age keeps me young. Zara is bouncing off the walls and full of energy, and Genevieve is on the go from the minute she wakes up.

“When I met Ali I was torn about whether I wanted more kids or not, but then you fall in love and it happens and it’s great. Having five children is like, ‘Wow’.”

Being a dad to young kids at his age puts him in the perfect position to comment on Simon Cowell’s impending fatherhood. “Simon is a great guy and will be a fantastic dad,” he says. “He’s the same age as me, and he’ll have plenty of energy.

“I’ve met Simon a few times through the charity work he does, and he’s great with kids. Zara loves him.

“He has a fantastic rapport with children.

“People say 53 is too old to be a dad, but I don’t think so. It’s the input you have that counts, and you’re more experienced and worldly-wise.”

With plans to release a new solo album in the autumn and tour dates lined up for October, Tony still finds time to be a hands-on dad.

He admits things were different when his older kids – Tom, 29, Toni, 26, and Mackenzie, 22 – were little.

“I’m around a lot more now because I’ve stopped doing the block tours I did with Spandau,” he says.

“Although when the album comes out I’m going to be promoting that and I’ll be in Australia and New Zealand.

“But generally I have a lot more quality home time as I’m not going off for months and months. I want to appreciate every moment with the kids now as they’re only young for a finite amount of time.”

Tony’s fans these days aren’t the hysterical teens they once were. “The majority of my fans are 30-plus,” he says. “But I have some who are in their late 60s.

“On the other side, I also get kids who are 17 or 18 who are into the whole 80s thing and like tracks like Gold.

“The reaction was incredible after it was played at the Olympics last year, but even I was sick to death of it in the end.” Tony has made no secret of the fact that he’s a big fan himself of One Direction. “They should take advantage of the money, fame and girls, and fill their boots,” he says.

While he admits that watching Harry Styles and co makes him nostalgic, he says he is happier now than he was back in the early days of his career.

“Life has come good for me,” he says. “I have a beautiful family and a great career, and I’m actually earning more now than I was in the 80s.

“When I’m asked, ‘Do you have any regrets?’ I always say, ‘No, I don’t have any’.”

There is another email scam making the rounds these days — and this time the scammers are using your cable bill to get you to fork over money. The email is generated by addresses ending in @shawcable.com or @shawcommunications.com, which is a good indication it’s a scam given Shaw email addresses end in @shaw.ca or @sjrb.ca.

The email says your Shaw account is past due and there is a balance owing. It goes on to say if they do not receive payment, the account will be deactivated and turned over to collections. It also warns that if it gets to that point, there will be a reactivation charge of $15. The email offers a link to pay online that asks for the phone number associated with the account, the account number, a credit card number and expiration date and one of the following: email address, password, secret word or PIN.

One Victoria Shaw customer, who received the spam email but did not get sucked into the scam, said it was clearly fake given she pays her bill every month using automatic payment on her credit card and she watches her statement closely every month.

The Better Business Bureau has not yet had any complaints. A Shaw spokesman said the company is looking into the situation but dismissed it as an email “phishing” scam.

What was the inspiration behind the new La Ferrari watch?
It was developed very closely in association with the engineers at Ferrari. The idea was to create a watch that was very closely inspired by the La Ferrari car model. This is the first time, I think, that a watch brand and a car have actually worked together, from a technology point of view, to create a watch. The watch has 50 hours of power reserve, which is a record for a mechanical, manually wound watch. Also, it was designed to evoke the engine of the car. So it has eleven barrels, arranged vertically, and a unique design. Very reminiscent of the car itself.
The brand has a clear direction. A lot of innovation without any boundaries or barriers. Do whatever the creativity of our people lead us to do.
But not a lot of these kinds of innovations make real business sense, do they?
But they serve other purposes. This watch sits at the top of the pyramid. It is good for our business image. It reflects our potential.
From a business perspective, our focus remains on the UNICO movement. The Big Bang watches with the UNICO movement. This year, we have come out with the UNICO chronograph movement that is 100% inhouse. Historically, the Big Bang has been the key to our success. And now we’re putting our own movement. This is the next step.
Also, this year, we have several watches for ladies. In bright colours. We have not forgotten the ladies!
There seems to be a growing trend, among consumers, of returning to the basics, of going back to simple, small, elegant watches. You’ve always been a brand that made big, bold watches. How do you respond to that trend?
In fact, we’ve developed a Classic Fusion collection which has these kinds of watches. This year, we have a Classic Fusion Skeleton Tourbillon in Black Ceramic.
But we must stay true to our DNA. Where we do something different, something bold. We will reinterpret classical watches in our own way. That I think is a very good answer to this trend.
And it is being led by the Chinese market…
The Big Bang Ferrari. Absolutely. They are driving this classical trend. They are the biggest market. The biggest consumers of watches. Today, they buy classical watches. So a lot of brands are following that trend. I don’t think that is always a good thing to do. We don’t want to adapt our research and development and creativity to cater to just one trend from one market.
We want the consumer to come to our brand. And so far we are happy with how the market is responding to our Classic Fusion line.
Traditionally, watches and car companies don’t really go well together. The association rarely throws up products that work in the market. What are you doing differently with Ferrari? Is this tendency something you are afraid of?
This is true. The previous watch brand that was associated with Ferrari…it was not a success. We are aware of this. I think the secret is to make it more than just a licensee relationship. It should go much deeper. There should be a 360-degree relationship between both brands. What does this mean for us? We must work with Ferrari dealerships. When they do an event, we must be there with them. When they are at F1 events, we are there. When they do classic car events, we are there.
So we are activating all the different worlds of Ferrari. This is the key element from a partnership point of view.
From a product perspective, we have decided to do only one watch. Limited edition. There is no point in adding a Ferrari collection of watches to our core collection. At each time, we will have only one Ferrari watch in the market. When that sells out, we will make another one. And so on.
What is your strategy for movements? Access to movements is something a lot of brands are worried about, or at least thinking about.
Today, we make approximately 20% of our movements in-house. Every single complication, 100%, is made in-house. Which is around 400 haute pieces. A key element of keeping this brand successful for the next 10-15 years is to be able to make a much larger part of our output in-house.
Our goal is to make 70-80% of all movements in-house. This is why we are building a second manufactory. It will be ready in two years. We will produce both movement and materials in-house. We want to make all our high-tech materials—ceramics, alloys—in-house.
What is the next phase of Hublot’s innovation? You’ve done materials, sizes, fusion…
We have a lot of projects going on in the field of materials. We’ve financed a chair at a university that will do fundamental research into metallic alloys. Linked to the ceramic. We’re really looking for coloured ceramics.
We’re also doing a big investment to see if we can use new materials for parts in movements. Traditionally, this material has been brass. We want to develop alternatives.
What is the way forward for the brand? Are you looking to grow? Rejig pricing?
For a brand like us, exclusivity is important. Currently, we make about 35,000 watches a year. To maintain our current positioning, we should limit our output to between 40,000 and 50,000 watches. No more. Anything more and we’ll have to fundamentally restructure the company. For the next five-seven years, I expect to cap it at 50,000 pieces.
We also want to increase our average prices, especially with more in-house manufacture. Once you hit an annual revenue of half a billion Swiss Francs, you are a serious player. We are not far away.

Wahrscheinlich ist es ganz gut, dass ich einen robusten Kombi fahre, der einiges an Gewicht aushält – so besonders schwer war mein Herz, als ich abfahren musste. Nach einer Kurve hatte ich schon Heimweh. Warum heißt es eigentlich, dass man aufhören soll, wenn es am schönsten ist? Die Wärme und Wohligkeit dieses wunderbaren Sommers werden meine Bronchien und ich nicht so schnell vergessen. Uns allen war schon klar, als wir noch auf der Insel waren, welch Glück und Privileg wir hatten, jedoch wenige Tage in der Großstadt potenzieren diesen Eindruck noch, wie vermisse ich die Brandung, die Luft, die stillen guten Morgende, die Sommerfreunde. Die Familie konnte noch bleiben, doch nun muss auch sie packen, während ich dies schreibe und ruft an: Wo ist dies, wo ist das, wo soll die Flagge hin? Kirschbäume sind gepflanzt, Kübel noch einmal gründlich gewässert, neue Hakenleiste in der Garage angebracht, Trockner mit den Handtüchern läuft, die neuen Vorräte an Erdbeermarmelade (in Insiderkreisen Mamilade genannt) sind im Kühlschrank verstaut, die Stühle zum Aufarbeiten zu Mylin gebracht. Noch was? Ich bin gerührt über die hilfsbereite Sippe und ahne, wie sie sich fühlen wird, wenn die Abreise-Hektik der Wahrheit auf dem Autozug weicht. Wir reisen ja nie ganz ab, Sylt ist für uns ganzjähriger Seelenort, aber nach dem Sommer und besonders nach diesem Sommer, fällt die Rückkehr ins wahre Leben besonders schwer. Zumal die Frage mitfährt, was ist eigentlich das wahre Leben?

Costco’s alleged bait and switch advertisement could cost them

Luxury fashion company Michael Kors has sued warehouse retailer Costco Wholesale Corp. in federal court over an alleged “bait and switch” advertisement. Kors accuses Costco of false advertising and unfair competition under the federal Lanham Act and New York common law. The complaint centers around an email blast advertisement that Costco sent to its customers regarding “Mother’s Day Gift Ideas.” The advertisement, pictured below, touts “Designer Handbags starting at $99.99,” and features a picture of three large handbags, one of which, according to the complaint, “is unmistakably a Michael Kors handbag that prominently features the Michael Kors Trademarks.” Furthermore, three of the seven smaller handbags featured in the advertisement are also Michael Kors handbags, according to the complaint.

Kors alleges that Costco is not an authorized retailer of its handbags. Furthermore, Kors alleges that its handbags are not available on the Costco website, nor are they generally available in Costco’s retail stores. To this end, Kors notes that it sent investigators to nineteen Costco stores in the United States, none of which carried the designer’s handbags.

Kors argues that the advertisement in question deceived consumers by “add[ing] to the perceived value of Costco’s handbag selection, and mak[ing] Costco’s other handbags look more valuable by means of their association with Michael Kors’ luxury handbags.” Kors also claims that the bait and switch advertisement increased sales of Costco’s other products. Kors seeks an injunction to bar Costco from using Kors’ trademarks, from advertising or selling any Michael Kors products, and from making any representations regarding an affiliation with Kors. In addition to actual damages and Costco’s gains, profits, savings, and advantages obtained as a result of the advertisement, Kors also seeks attorneys’ fees and costs, and treble damages based on Costco’s allegedly willful conduct.

As others have noted, Costco is no stranger to lawsuits of this nature. The famous jewelry company Tiffany & Co. also recently sued Costco over the sale of unauthorized Tiffany-branded engagement rings. That case is still pending.

It is no surprise that luxury fashion companies go after wholesale and discount stores that they feel are infringing their brand names. As Kors stated in its complaint, the company has “invested hundreds of millions of dollars to market and advertise the Michael Kors brand,” and “carefully controls the channels of distribution and the depiction of products in advertisements to maintain the prestige that its customers associate with the brand.” When high-end fashion companies feel the cache of their brands are being challenged, they must take action to protect their valuable brand names.

I had lunch with Julie Christie, an actress of delicate beauty, who was dressed in one with a hemline stretched above her upper thigh.

America’s Cup challenge in their own towns and

step towards foiling), which is fun and appeals to all ages,
and turned it into a way for Kiwis everywhere to show their
support for the team.

Kiwis can participate in ‘Lean
with us’ through an online competition at www.leanwithus.co.nz that invites people
to submit their best leaning photo, share the photo with
friends and family but ultimately show their support for
Emirates Team New Zealand.

Prizes include the keys to a

The fastest man in the world was in London, England this week to visit with luxury watchmaker Hublot. Usain Bolt, who is a brand ambassador for the Swiss manufacture, dropped by the Hublot boutique in London to see the newly-arrived pieces from brand’s 2013 novelties collection.

(9 August 2013) – Spirit of Daytona Racing played host to an enthusiastic group of Corvette owners on Friday of the VISITFLORIDA.com Sports Car 250 race weekend as Road America is set to stage a history-making double-header race weekend with both the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series as well as the American Le Mans Series racing at Road America.

The Corvette owners group, which had members from more than 10 states as well as Canada, got the chance to take a behind the scenes look as Spirit of Daytona Racing prepared the No. 90 VISITFLORIDA.com Corvette DP for Saturday’s race.
It was a busy day on the track for the team as well, as Spirit of Daytona Racing had one final practice session in the morning before taking to the track to qualify for Saturday’s 2.75-hour event.

“It was great to have all the Corvette owners here with us today,” offered team owner Troy Flis. “This track is great because it always has some of the best fans and the Corvette club is really active. So that was a fun part of the day, just to have them all here and get to show them a little bit of what we do on these race weekends. We were hoping to have a little bit something more to show them in qualifying. But we just didn’t hit the window right as far as the sweet spot with the tires and that magic lap. But tomorrow is what matters, so hopefully we can come forward once we get going.”

La Polizia di Valencia, in Spagna ha chiuso un’officina ed arrestato otto persone per contraffazione di supercar. Durante il blitz i poliziotti hanno infatti sorpreso otto persone al lavoro all’interno dell’officina, sequestrando ben 19 riproduzioni non autorizzate di diverse supercar, per la maggior parte Ferrari ed Aston Martin . La banda di falsari acquistava delle vecchie Toyota spogliandole quasi interamente della loro carrozzeria ed utilizzando solo telaio e meccanica. Dopo aver preparato la base, vi costruivano attorno una carrozzeria in fibra di vetro modellata a mano che ricorda quella delle sportive di Maranello, riprendendone particolari come fanali, loghi e griglie, per poi venderle a circa 40 - 45 mila euro l’una.


Gli spagnoli erano ormai nel campo della contraffazione di supercar da tempo e, viste le vetture sequestrate, avevano anche una discreta abilità nel creare contraffazioni delle vetture originali. Durante il sequestro la Polizia ha ritirato 17 Ferrari, tra cui alcune repliche di Ferrari F430 e Ferrari 458 Italia e due Aston Martin , tutte costruite su specifiche dei clienti ed ordinabili direttamente dal sito internet dell’organizzazione.


La Polizia Spagnola ha poi rilasciato alcune immagini delle vetture ed un filmato: balza immediatamente all’occhio l’ovvia falsità delle vetture, che presentano proporzioni sballate rispetto alle originali, ma la cura dei dettagli e dei particolari risulta di buon livello, anche se, ovviamente la realizzazione non è minimamente paragonabile a quella delle vetture originali. Anche gli interni, a quanto pare dalle immagini, risultano curati ma con particolari fuoriposto: basti pensare che su una finta Ferrari F430 è stato sistemato un finto Manettino, che però non regola nulla del comportamento dinamico dell’auto, solo per fare un esempio.

Ross has his own felony conviction to contend with. In 2007, he spent three months in a halfway house for tax evasion, which at least suggests he took the “no taxation without representation” argument seriously. Ross says he stopped paying payroll taxes in order to keep paying his employees, a decision he now regrets. “You might say I have a checkered past,” the would-be shadow senator says.


Ross promises to turn his talent for getting thrown in jail for good. Unlike other activists arrested with Mayor Vince Gray in 2011 in a voting rights protest, Ross insisted on jail time.


He tells LL he’d do the same as shadow senator, in a reign that sounds half Code Pink, half Donald Trump . Ross says he’d start by crashing the 2015 swearing-in ceremony for actual senators, with more civil disobedience to follow. Unlike Strauss, he points out, he doesn’t have a bar membership that could be endangered by convictions. For all of his problems, Ross is believable on this: Anyone who can get people to pay $1,475 for “pentagonal stools” has to have a flair for promotion.


Ross is starting his campaign earlier this time.
